This is a strategic advisory assignment focused on a major platform decision. You will evaluate whether consolidating data engineering, storage, and analytics capabilities onto Databricks would provide measurable advantages compared to continuing the incremental modernization of the current environment. Your assessment should cover platform economics, engineering productivity, operational complexity, and end user outcomes.
Your Responsibilities
- Assess the current AWS-based data platform and its modernization roadmap
- Compare a Databricks-based approach against continued evolution of the existing platform
- Evaluate multi-year Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) across both scenarios
- Assess whether migration could reduce operational complexity and maintenance effort for data engineering teams
- Evaluate potential benefits for analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders
- Deliver independent, vendor-neutral recommendations and decision-making material for senior leadership
Requirements
- Proven experience in technology strategy consulting, platform assessments, or architecture advisory engagements
- Strong understanding of Databricks and modern data platform architectures
- Experience evaluating platform strategies from both business and engineering perspectives
- Experience building TCO analyses, investment cases, or technology cost models
- Ability to communicate complex technical trade-offs to senior business stakeholders
- Strong analytical and stakeholder management skills
Technical Requirements
- Strong understanding of cloud-based data and analytics platforms
- Deep familiarity with Databricks capabilities and operating models
- Understanding of modern data platform technologies such as Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Apache Iceberg, Amazon Athena, and AWS Glue
- Experience with data platform modernization, migration, or consolidation initiatives
- Understanding of data engineering, analytics, and data science workflows
